Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will continue studying matter. Students will be able to classify matter based on physical properties including mass, magnetism, physical state, relative density, solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electrical energy. Students will be able to identify the boiling and freezing/melting points of water on the Celsius scale. Students will be able to demonstrate that some mixtures maintain physical properties of ingredients such as iron filings and sand. Students will be identify solutions such as dissolving salt in water or adding lemon juice to water. Students will be able to predict, observe, and record changes in states of matter caused by heating or cooling.
Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Thursday over Properties of Matter. Please have your child study the following words and definitions. Matter-anything that has mass and takes up space Weight-measurement of the effect of gravity on an object's mass Mass-the amount of matter in a substance Solid-a state of matter that has a fixed shape and volume Liquid-a state of matter that can change shape, but has a fixed volume Gas- a state of matter that changes volume and shape Volume-the amount of space something takes up Relative Density-whether something sinks or floats in water Your child may prefer to study the words on my quizlet at the following address https://quizlet.com/_3psn54
