Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will be learning about plants, photosynthesis, and the carbon dioxide/oxygen cycle. There will be a vocabulary quiz over the words below on Thursday. There will be a test Friday over Animal Adaptations and what we learn this week. Students can study for both using their science journals.
glucose - sugar created inside a plant during photosynthesis stomata - small openings in leaves that allow gases to enter and exit the plant oxygen - gas released by a plant carbon dioxide - gas taken in by a plant chloroplasts - give leaves their green color photosynthesis - process through which a plant gets energy Students can study their vocabulary at the following link on Quizlet if they prefer. https://quizlet.com/_4o2fhy All Students should be working on Education Galaxy at home in Math, Reading, and Science. Students have their log on information and passwords as we have been using at school for about two months now. 4/10/18 Math STAAR 4/11/18 Reading STAAR 4/16/18 JIS Holiday 5/14/18 Math STAAR Retest 5/15/18 Reading STAAR Retest 5/16/18 Science STAAR 5/23/18 EAFK Classroom Wishlist for hands on experiments- glue sticks, paper towels, wipes, paper plates, AA Batteries, vegetable oil, flour, cornstarch

This week we will begin life cycles. Students will be able to recognize the difference between complete and incomplete metamorphosis in insects and give examples of each.
You should have received a paper from your fifth grader from the Middle School telling about "Sneak Peek" next Tuesday and Wednesday, March 27 & 28 from 6:30 to 7:30 in the evening. You may choose one of those days to come and be introduced to the Sixth grade teachers and have a tour of the Middle School. Since we will be having a holiday for Good Friday, March 30, our vocabulary test will be held on Thursday, March 29. Here are the words for our test: VOCABULARY QUIZ, Thursday, March 29, 2018Study online at quizlet.com/_4mz9oc 1.complete metamorphosis: a change insects go through with four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult 2.incomplete metamorphosis: a change insects go through with three stages: egg, nymph and adult 3.life span: length of time from birth to death 4.molting: shedding skin 5.reproduce: to make offspring 6.species: a group of organisms that are able to reproduce and share the same characteristics 3/28/18 EAFK for Respect 3/27-28/18 Middle School Open House Nights 3/30/18 JIS Holiday 4/10/18 Math STAAR 4/11/18 Reading STAAR 4/16/18 JIS Holiday 5/14/18 Math STAAR Retest 5/15/18 Reading STAAR Retest 5/16/18 Science STAAR 5/23/18 EAFK Classroom Wishlist for hands on experiments- plastic eggs, glue sticks, paper towels, wipes, paper plates, AA Batteries, vegetable oil, flour, cornstarch Students will study animal adaptations and compare the structures and functions of different species that help them live and survive such as hooves on prairie animals or webbed feet in aquatic animals.
Our classroom is asking for donations of plastic eggs to be used to do a fun academic review activity. We ask that the donations be here Friday, March 23 so we have time to prepare. Students will have a quiz Thursday over the following vocabulary words. They may be studied on Quizlet at the following link https://quizlet.com/_4jdgib inherited traits - characteristics offspring gets from its parents adaptation - a body part or behavior that helps an animal survive in its environment dormancy - a period of inactivity for a plant hibernation - an inactive state of the body for an extended period of time migration - movement of animals from one place to another camouflage - body covering that helps an animal blend in with its environment instinct - a behavior that an animal knows how to do from birth that helps it survive extinct - species no longer living on Earth mimicry - resembling another species to protect an animal from predators 3/19/18 5th Grade Field Trip 3/28/18 EAFK for Respect 3/27-28/18 Middle School Open House Nights 3/30/18 JIS Holiday 4/10/18 Math STAAR 4/11/18 Reading STAAR 4/16/18 JIS Holiday 5/14/18 Math STAAR Retest 5/15/18 Reading STAAR Retest 5/16/18 Science STAAR 5/23/18 EAFK Classroom Wishlist for hands on experiments- plastic eggs, glue sticks, paper towels, wipes, paper plates, AA Batteries, vegetable oil, flour, cornstarch Students will be able to differentiate between inherited traits of plants and animals such as spines on a cactus or shape of a beak and learned behaviors such as an animal learning tricks or a child riding a bicycle. We will review for it in class on Thursday. A Field Day permission slip for the inflatables will be sent home. It will be due Thursday. A Field Trip permission slip was sent home last week and is due this Friday as the field trip is the day we come back from Spring Break.
