Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will be able to classify matter based on physical properties including mass, magnetism, physical state, relative density, solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electrical energy.
This week students will explore relative density, mixtures, and solutions through hands on labs and virtual labs in stemscopes. Students will have a UNIT 2 Test over Matter Friday. Students will receive a summary of the unit Monday to add to their Science Journals. Students may study their notes and vocabulary in their science journals in preparation for Friday's test. They should begin studying from the page entitled Properties of Matter Power Point and study through their current notes from this week. They may use quizlet to review their vocabulary words for the Matter Unit at the following links. quizlet.com/_3psn54 quizlet.com/_3r6zfw The words for the entire unit are below. Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space Weight - measurement of the effect of gravity on an object's mass Mass - the amount of matter in a substance Solid - a state of matter that has a fixed shape and volume Liquid - a state of matter that can change shape, but has a fixed volume Gas - a state of matter that changes volume and shape Volume - the amount of space something takes up Relative Density - whether something sinks or floats in water Mixture - a combination of two or more substances Solution - a mixture in which a new substance is formed Dissolve - to form a solution, to disappear Solubility - Whether a substance dissolves in water Melting/Freezing Point - 0 degrees Celsius for water Boiling Point - 100 degrees Celsius for water Condensation - when water vapor becomes liquid water Evaporation - when liquid water becomes water vapor If you have not signed up for a conference with your homeroom teacher, please do so.
