5th Grade Science
Students will continue our unit of force, motion, and energy. Students will learn that energy occurs in many forms and will study the effect of forces on objects. Students will explore the uses of energy, including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound. Students will learn about circuits and light.
Students will begin the week by finishing up their force and motion labs. Students will then begin lessons about the different forms of energy and their uses. Students need to study the following vocabulary for the unit. Conductor-a substance that allows electricity to travel through it Insulator-a substance that does not allow electricity to travel through it Circuit-an electrical device that allows electricity to flow through Current-the flow of electricity Light-a form of energy that travels in waves and a straight line that can move through empty space Sound-a form of energy created by vibrations Reflection-the bouncing back of light waves Refraction-the bending of light through a substance Opaque-not allowing light to pass through Translucent-allows only some light to pass through Transparent-allows light to pass through If you have not signed up for parent teacher conferences, please call your child's teacher at 512-746-4805 to schedule your conference time. Donations for JIS Fall Festival Silent Auctions baskets may be turned in to your child's teachers. They are due 10-20-17. Pettyjohn/Mertink/Scott's group is asked to bring things to make a Movie Munchies Basket. This would include things like movies, candies, snacks, and popcorn. The PTO will provide the baskets and arrange the contents to auction to raise money for our school.
