Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will continue studying matter. Students will be able to classify matter based on physical properties including mass, magnetism, physical state, relative density, solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electrical energy. Students will be able to identify the boiling and freezing/melting points of water on the Celsius scale. Students will be able to demonstrate that some mixtures maintain physical properties of ingredients such as iron filings and sand. Students will be identify solutions such as dissolving salt in water or adding lemon juice to water. Students will be able to predict, observe, and record changes in states of matter caused by heating or cooling.
Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Thursday over the Changes in Matter Vocabulary. Please have your child study the following words and definitions. Mixture-a combination of two or more substances Solution-a mixture in which a new substance is formed Dissolve-to form a solution Solubility-whether a substance dissolves in water Melting/Freezing Point- 0 degrees Celsius for water Boiling Point- 100 degrees Celsius for water Condensation-when water vapor becomes liquid water Evaporation- when liquid water becomes water vapor Your child may prefer to study the words on my quizlet at the following address https://quizlet.com/_3r6zfw
