Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will begin studying Ecosystems, food chains, food webs, and living and non-living organisms. We will also review weather, climate, and the water cycle. Students will have a vocabulary quiz over the following words on Friday. They may also study on Quizlet at the following link
https://quizlet.com/_4gqro2 ecosystem-All the populations of organisms and the nonliving things in an environment and the interaction among them population- All the organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time. community- populations of different species that live in the same area at the same time. niche-The role, or place, of an organism in a community, especially in regards to food webs. biome- One of six major land areas of the world that is home to specific plant and animal populations and is defined by its climate producers- Organisms that produce, or make, their own food; plants consumers- animals that consume, or eat, other organisms herbivores- animals that eat ONLY plants carnivores- animals that eat ONLY other animals omnivores- animals that eat both plants and animals decomposers- Organisms that feed on dead plants and animals, as well as animal wastes predator- animals that hunt other animals for food prey animals that hunted by predators food chain- the path of energy from the sun to a producer to an animal to another animal food web- a group of overlapping food chains scavenger- animal that only eats dead plants and animals 2/27/18 Math Benchmark 2/28/18 Reading Benchmark 3/1/18 Science Benchmark 3/9/18 JIS Field Day 3/12-16/18 Spring Break 3/28/18 EAFK for Respect 3/27-28/18 Middle School Open House Nights 3/30/18 JIS Holiday 4/10/18 Math STAAR 4/11/18 Reading STAAR 4/16/18 JIS Holiday 5/14/18 Math STAAR Retest 5/15/18 Reading STAAR Retest 5/16/18 Science STAAR 5/23/18 EAFK Classroom Wishlist for hands on experiments- empty paper towel tubes (or wrapping paper or tissue), glue sticks, paper towels, wipes, paper plates, AA Batteries, vegetable oil, flour, cornstarch Students will be able to differentiate between weather and climate. Students will be able to diagram and describe the water cycle.
Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Thursday over the following words. Students will be given vocabulary homework on Monday and it will be due Friday. They can study the words from their homework or from quizlet at the following link https://quizlet.com/_4feelm accumulation: Water that collects on the Earth's surface 2.condensation: When water vapor changes to a liquid after a decrease in thermal energy 3.evaporation: When liquid water changes to a gas after an increase in thermal energy 4.ground water: Water under the Earth's surface that supplies wells and springs 5.percolation: The movement of water through the soil 6.precipitation: Water that falls from clouds to Earth as rain, hail, sleet, or snow. 7.runoff: Water that does not soak into the ground and instead flows across the Earth's surface. 8.transpiration: the process by which plants give off water vapor through the stomata in their leaves 9.water cycle: the process in which water continuously moves from Earth's surface into the atmosphere and back again. 5th Grade will be having Valentine Parties with our homerooms on Wednesday at the end of the day. Students are asked to bring Valentines for their homeroom and may bring Valentines for friends outside of their homeroom if they would like. Mrs. Pettyjohn sent home a note and emailed out a sign up genius for students to bring snacks to share and a list of student names. We have 23 students in our homeroom. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. 2/14/18 Homeroom Valentine Party 2/19/18 Student Holiday/Staff In service 3/19/18 JIS Field Day 3/12-16/18 Spring Break 3/28/18 EAFK for Respect 3/27-28/18 Middle School Open House Nights 3/30/18 JIS Holiday 4/10/18 Math STAAR 4/11/18 Reading STAAR 4/12/18 Science Benchmark 4/16/18 JIS Holiday 5/14/18 Math STAAR Retest 5/15/18 Reading STAAR Retest 5/16/18 Science STAAR 5/23/18 EAFK Classroom Wishlist for hands on experiments- empty paper towel tubes (or wrapping paper or tissue), glue sticks, paper towels, wipes, paper plates, AA Batteries, rubber gloves, vegetable oil, Vinegar, baking soda, flour, cornstarch Students will be able to differentiate between weather and climate. Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Thursday over the following words. They may practice their vocabulary words on Quizlet at the following link https://quizlet.com/_4e1nk2 atmosphere-The mixture of gases that surround the Earth. climate-The pattern of weather an area experiences over a long period of time. climate zone-An area that has similar average temperatures and precipitation throughout. condensation-The process by which a gas changes into a liquid equator-An imaginary line around Earth, equally distant from the North and South Poles. evaporation-The process by which a liquid changes into a gas. latitude-A measure of how far north or south a place is from the equator precipitation-Water that falls from clouds to Earth's surface. runoff-Water that does not soak into the ground and instead flows across Earth's surface. water cycle-The process in which water continuously moves from Earth's surface into the atmosphere and back again. weather-The condition of the atmosphere at a certain place and time. source of energy-where energy for the water cycle comes from transpiration-water vapor leaving a plant and entering the atmosphere 2/14/18 Homeroom Valentine Party 2/19/18 Student Holiday/Staff In service 3/19/18 JIS Field Day 3/12-16/18 Spring Break 3/28/18 EAFK for Respect 3/27-28/18 Middle School Open House Nights 3/30/18 JIS Holiday 4/10/18 Math STAAR 4/11/18 Reading STAAR 4/12/18 Science Benchmark 4/16/18 JIS Holiday 5/14/18 Math STAAR Retest 5/15/18 Reading STAAR Retest 5/16/18 Science STAAR 5/23/18 EAFK Classroom Wishlist for hands on experiments- empty paper towel tubes (or wrapping paper or tissue), glue sticks, paper towels, wipes, paper plates, AA Batteries, rubber gloves, vegetable oil, Vinegar, baking soda, flour, cornstarch |
