Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will study shadows and the order of the planets. We will also review rotation and revolution and Earth's patterns. Students will have a Unit test on Thursday covering material they have learned about Space since the holiday break. They should be bringing their Science notebooks home to study this week. We will also be using the notebooks in class and reveiwing material in class too. The test will cover the Sun, Moon, and Earth, moon phases, vocabulary, shadows, tides, seasons, day/night cycle.
Students will also have a vocabulary quiz over the following words on Wednesday. Atmosphere -The air that surrounds the Earth. It is made of a mixture of gases. Axis -The imaginary line that an object rotates around. Revolution "Happy Revolution!- To go around or orbit another object. Takes 365 days for Earth's revolution around the sun. Orbit -The path of one object in space around another object. Rotation "roDAYtion" - To spin on an axis; causes day and night. Composition -What something is made or composed of. The vocabulary words may be studied on quizlet at the following link https://quizlet.com/_4co8qp On Wednesday, January 31st, there will be a lunar event that has not happened in 155 years! We will see a full moon that is also a Blue Moon (meaning that it is the second full moon in a month), a Super moon (which appears brighter and larger) and a Blood Moon (lunar eclipse). 1/31/18 EAFK Ceremony 2/14/18 Homeroom Valentine Party 2/19/18 Student Holiday/Staff Inservice Classroom Wishlist for hands on experiments- glue sticks, paper towels, wipes, paper plates, AA Batteries, rubber gloves, vegetable oil, Vinegar, baking soda, flour, cornstarch

Students will study patterns of change in shadows, tides, seasons, and the observable appearance of the Moon over time.
Students will have a test over the moon phases and the vocabulary below on Wednesday. Vocabulary- Moon any natural satellite of a planet Waxing to grow Waning to shrink Phases a stage in a process of change or development Solar having to do with the sun Lunar having to do with the moon Crescent a curved shape that is wider in the middle than at its ends Gibbous refers to a moon in between a half-moon but less than a full moon Students will also need to know the 8 moon phases. Students will be able to recognize patterns in the natural world and among the Sun, Earth, and Moon System. Students will be able to demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. Students will be able to identify and compare the physcial characteristics of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Students will be able to list the planets in order starting from the Sun. Students will be able to identfiy Moon Phases.
Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Thursday over the following words. They may practice on Quizlet using the following link. https://quizlet.com/_4994mn Orbit- the path of an object in space Revolve-to travel around another object in space in a circle or oval Rotate-to spin on an axis New Moon-phase of the moon when we cannot see the moon from Earth Full Moon-phase of the moon where the whole moon appears lit up Axis-an imaginary line that goes through the center of the Earth 1/8/18 First Day back from Winter break 1/15/18 Student and Staff Holiday 1/31/18 EAFK Ceremony 2/19/18 Student Holiday/Staff Inservice Classroom Wishlist for hands on experiments- glue sticks, AA Batteries, Oreos, rubber gloves, vegetable oil |
