Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will explore the uses of energy, including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound using stemscopes this week.
Students will have a short test over Force & Motion on Wednesday. The following is their study guide. Newton- Unit of measurement for force Repeating an experiment increases the reliability of the experiment’s results. Gravity-the force of attraction between objects, such as the attraction between Earth and objects on it Balanced forces- forces that cancel each other out because they are equal in strength and opposite in direction Unbalance forces-forces that cause a change in an object’s motion because they don’t cancel each other out Friction- a force that acts between two touching objects and that opposes motion, slows motion Force-a push or a pull, which may cause a change in an object’s motion Students will begin working with the following vocabulary words this week. They may also practice on quizlet. quizlet.com/_3vlxgo The quiz will likely be next week. Conductor - a substance that allows electricity to travel through it Insulator - a substance that does not allow electricity to travel through it Circuit - an electrical device that allows electricity to flow through Current - the flow of electricity Light - a form of energy that travels in waves and a straight line that can move through empty space Sound - a form of energy created by vibrations Reflection - the bouncing back of light waves Refraction - the bending of light through a substance Opaque - not allowing light to pass through Translucent - allows only some light to pass through Transparent - allows light to pass through If you have not signed up for a conference with your homeroom teacher, please do so. Students may study their vocabulary words for Friday's quiz at the following link. quizlet.com/_3ubgmr Force - a push or pull that can change the position or motion of an object Motion - a change in the position of an object Gravity - the force that pulls objects toward each other Friction - a force that works against motion Push - the act of applying force in order to move something away Pull - the act of applying force to move something toward or with you Balanced Forces - forces that cancel each other out because they are equal in size and opposite in directions Unbalanced Forces - forces that cause a change in an object's motion because they don't cancel each other out Potential Energy - energy that an object has because of its position or its condition Kinetic Energy - energy that an object has because of motion Students will receive their graded Unit 2 Matter tests tomorrow. They will have an opportunity to make corrections to increase their grade up to a 70 if they received a 65 or below. Students will write corrections (the entire question and the entire correct answer--not just the letter) on a sheet of notebook paper and staple it to the original test and turn it in.
