Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will continue our unit of force, motion, and energy. Students will learn that energy occurs in many forms and will study the effect of forces on objects. Students will explore the uses of energy, including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound. Students will learn about circuits and light through hands on labs this week.
Students will have a vocabulary quiz Tuesday over the energy vocabulary they were given the week of 10-17-17 which is below for reference. Conductor-a substance that allows electricity to travel through it Insulator-a substance that does not allow electricity to travel through it Circuit-an electrical device that allows electricity to flow through Current-the flow of electricity Light-a form of energy that travels in waves and a straight line that can move through empty space Sound-a form of energy created by vibrations Reflection-the bouncing back of light waves Refraction-the bending of light through a substance Opaque-not allowing light to pass through Translucent-allows only some light to pass through Transparent-allows light to pass through Students will have a test over force and motion on Wednesday. They will be need to study their journals and text books. Students will explore the uses of energy, including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound. Students will learn about circuits and light.
Students will begin the week by finishing up their force and motion labs. Students will then begin lessons about the different forms of energy and their uses. Students need to study the following vocabulary for the unit. Conductor-a substance that allows electricity to travel through it Insulator-a substance that does not allow electricity to travel through it Circuit-an electrical device that allows electricity to flow through Current-the flow of electricity Light-a form of energy that travels in waves and a straight line that can move through empty space Sound-a form of energy created by vibrations Reflection-the bouncing back of light waves Refraction-the bending of light through a substance Opaque-not allowing light to pass through Translucent-allows only some light to pass through Transparent-allows light to pass through If you have not signed up for parent teacher conferences, please call your child's teacher at 512-746-4805 to schedule your conference time. Donations for JIS Fall Festival Silent Auctions baskets may be turned in to your child's teachers. They are due 10-20-17. Pettyjohn/Mertink/Scott's group is asked to bring things to make a Movie Munchies Basket. This would include things like movies, candies, snacks, and popcorn. The PTO will provide the baskets and arrange the contents to auction to raise money for our school. Students need to study the following vocabulary for the unit. Vocabulary Quiz is Thursday! Force- a push or pull that can change the position or motion of an object Motion-a change in the position of an object Gravity-the force that pulls objects toward each other Friction-a force that works against motion Push-the act of applying force in order to move something away Pull-the act of applying force to move something toward or with you Balanced Forces-forces that cancel each other out because they are equal in size and opposite in directions Unbalanced Forces-forces that cause a change in an object's motion because they don't cancel each other out Potential Energy-energy that an object has because of its position or its condition Kinetic Energy-energy that an object has because of motion The Quizlet link is below to study. https://quizlet.com/_3ubgmr If you have not signed up for parent teacher conferences, please call your child's teacher at 512-746-4805 to schedule your conference time. Students will continue to work on their hands on labs about Magnetism, Matter, Mixtures, and Solutions. Students will review Matter on Thursday in preparation for Friday's Test over Matter. In order to prepare for the test at home, students should study the last 2 weeks of vocabulary (Properties of Matter and Changes in Matter) either in their notebook or on Quizlet. Students completed a 20 question multiple choice Unit 1 handout last week, that was graded and returned. Students would benefit from studying it also. Students may also study Unit 3 Matter in their Science Fusion text book. Students will also complete a review in class on Thursday.
