Mrs. Pettyjohn's
5th Grade Science
Students will be building circuits this week. They will build open, closed, series, and parallel circuits. Students will have Math and Reading Benchmark testing this week. They will also complete a Science Common Formative Assessment, which will cover every standard we have learned so far this year. The results will be used to reteach standards to students as necessary.

Students are studying energy. Students will learn about light and objects being opaque, transparent, and translucent. Students will be able to differeniate between open and closed circuits.
Students will be reviewing by creating posters. Students will have a test over the forms of energy, light, and circuits on Friday. Students should study their journal entries dating 10/8/18 to present. They will also review in class on Thursday. Students are working with the following vocabulary words. They may also practice on quizlet. quizlet.com/_3vlxgo Conductor - a substance that allows electricity to travel through it Insulator - a substance that does not allow electricity to travel through it Circuit - an electrical device that allows electricity to flow through Current - the flow of electricity Light - a form of energy that travels in waves and a straight line that can move through empty space Sound - a form of energy created by vibrations Reflection - the bouncing back of light waves Refraction - the bending of light through a substance Opaque - not allowing light to pass through Translucent - allows only some light to pass through Transparent - allows light to pass through If you have not signed up for a conference with your homeroom teacher, please do so. Newton- Unit of measurement for force Repeating an experiment increases the reliability of the experiment’s results. Gravity-the force of attraction between objects, such as the attraction between Earth and objects on it Balanced forces- forces that cancel each other out because they are equal in strength and opposite in direction Unbalance forces-forces that cause a change in an object’s motion because they don’t cancel each other out Friction- a force that acts between two touching objects and that opposes motion, slows motion Force-a push or a pull, which may cause a change in an object’s motion Students will begin working with the following vocabulary words this week.
